What is it?
An echocardiogram, also called échographie du cœur (heart ultrasound) or échocardiographie, is an imaging test that shows your heart in motion using ultrasound, with no radiation. A probe is placed on the chest, usually over the left side, so the cardiologist can see the size and function of the heart chambers, the strength of the heart muscle and the state of the valves.
This heart ultrasound lets the cardiologist screen for or follow many heart conditions, such as valve disease, heart failure and congenital anomalies. It's completely painless and usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes: you simply lie on your left side while the images are recorded.
